Omega Speedmaster CK2998 ‘Blue’ Limited Ed. 2016

Reissues of classic Speedmasters are a familiar practice for Omega. From the Speedmaster ’57 with its distinctive broad arrow hands and steel bezel to the First Omega in Space honoring a 1962 orbital mission, the brand is no stranger to celebrating its heritage. However, Omega typically executes these tributes with remarkable finesse—a challenging feat given the iconic status of the Speedmaster and the meticulous scrutiny vintage model collectors bring to the table.

The CK2998 limited edition draws inspiration from the original 1959 Speedmaster reference 2998, a foundational model for the Speedmaster we recognize today. This was the first version to feature the now-iconic black bezel (previously rendered in steel), alongside intricate dial details, distinct hand designs, and a case profile that established it as a milestone in the Speedmaster’s storied legacy.

The most noticeable departure from older Speedmasters is the CK2998’s striking color scheme. Omega opted for a fresh blue and silver palette reminiscent of a classic black-and-white panda dial. The ceramic bezel (with luminous markings), subdials, minute track, and strap are all rendered in matching blue, while the dial’s base boasts a semi-iridescent silver finish. Under most lighting, the combination appears more like navy and cream than bright blue and silver, but regardless of the description, the result is undeniably elegant.
