Among the most refined expressions of German watchmaking, the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down Ref. 234.032 embodies the spirit of traditional horology through exceptional craftsmanship, clarity of design, and meaningful complication. Introduced in 2013 at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), this model presents a beautifully balanced take on Lange’s core principles, precision, symmetry, and historical reverence within a warm 18K pink gold case measuring 39mm in diameter and 8.7mm thick. While it has since been discontinued, the 234.032 remains a highly sought-after reference among collectors for its understated sophistication and mechanical excellence.
The watch takes its name from the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange (1815), the founder of A. Lange & Söhne, who established the manufacture in the town of Glashütte in 1845. The “Up/Down” (or “Auf/Ab” in German) refers to the power reserve indicator at 8 o’clock, a feature rooted in Lange’s 19th-century pocket watches, paired with a small seconds subdial at 4 o’clock. Together, these sub-registers lend the dial a beautifully off-centered symmetry, while heat-blued hands, printed Arabic numerals, and a railroad-style minute track complete the classical aesthetic on a dial made of solid silver.
At its heart lies the in-house, manual-winding Caliber L051.2, a beautifully decorated movement showcasing Lange’s signature craftsmanship. It features a 72-hour power reserve, a hand-engraved balance cock, gold chatons secured by blued screws, and a three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver. The finishing is, as always with Lange, exceptional with every component is decorated and assembled twice by hand in the Glashütte tradition.
While it may not boast a chronograph or perpetual calendar, the 1815 Up/Down Ref. 234.032 is a purist’s watch, a timepiece that favors horological depth over complication count. It bridges Lange’s pocket watch heritage with its modern revival, which began in 1990 when Walter Lange re-established the brand after a decades-long hiatus.
