To distinguish their collection of mechanical timepieces from the increasing number of contemporary quartz watches, IWC introduced the Portofino series in 1984 with the concept of a “wrist-worn pocket watch.” Crafted to evoke the essence of a “marriage” watch, the Portofino showcases a substantial, curved case housing a prominent crown, a simple dial adorned with Roman numerals, and slender feuille-style hands. While it is frequently likened to elegant dress watches like the Patek Philippe Calatrava, Portofino’s distinctive Lepine “pocket watch” design sets it apart in a unique fashion.
IWC released a classic-styled dress watch in the Portofino line to compete with the increasing popularity of the classic Calatrava and also to reach out to the budget-tighter audience with the stainless steel version. The Portofino was introduced with a classic leather strap and a more stylish stainless steel ‘Bead of Rice” bracelet version.
