The reference 3940 epitomizes the quintessential Patek Philippe timepiece, seamlessly merging an exquisite dress watch with an exceptionally sophisticated complication.
During the intense period of the quartz crisis that significantly impacted the Swiss watch industry, Patek Philippe introduced a pair of watches featuring perpetual calendar complications housed in 36 mm cases. Among them, the ref. 3940 showcased this distinctive complication within an elegant, refined case. Notably, this watch was worn by Thierry Stern, a prominent figure in the Stern family, owners of Patek Philippe. The specific 3940J model resides in a yellow gold case, featuring a matching yellow gold screw-down case back. Its champagne dial is adorned with 18k yellow-gold pointed baton indexes and graceful 18k yellow-gold dauphine hands. Positioned at 12 o’clock, two apertures reveal the day and month mechanisms. The complications are artfully displayed across three recessed sub-dials. The sub-dial at 9 o’clock showcases the day of the week alongside a 24-hour hand, while the sub-dial at 3 encompasses the month and a leap year indicator. Lastly, the lower sub-dial hosts a delightful moon phase indicator encircled by a date complication. Officially, the 3940 was exclusively manufactured between 1985 and 2007, with this particular model dating back to 1990.
Presented on a black alligator leather strap by Patek Philippe, the watch is accompanied by a yellow gold deployant clasp and includes an Extract from the Patek Philippe Archives.
