The Sea-Dweller reference 1665 made its debut around 1967 and was specifically crafted for use in saturation diving. Distinguishing it from the ‘Red’ Submariner, the Double Red Sea-Dweller boasted a thicker case, a helium escape valve (HEV), the Sea-Dweller name on the dial, and a domed crystal without the Cyclops date lens. The “Great White” nickname originated from the absence of red text on the dial, with all text rendered in white.
This particular model, dating back to 1982, showcases a “Mark IV” dial, representing the second iteration of the white dial variation after Rolex transitioned from the “Double Red” to the “Great White.” Impressively, the watch remains in remarkable and honest condition, a rarity among Sea-Dwellers due to their typical usage during diving. Its aging over the years has imbued it with a beautiful patina, with the lume taking on a slightly off-white hue. Overall, it stands as an exemplary representation of an iconic dive watch.
When worn, the Great White Sea-Dweller exhibits an ideal balance on the wrist. It offers a substantial feel without overwhelming the wearer’s entire wrist. The pleasing patina adds to its allure, showcasing exceptional aging that captivates the eye. The domed crystal entices the wearer to admire its craftsmanship, encouraging them to explore different angles to fully appreciate how expertly contoured it is to showcase the dial.
