Rolex Submariner ref.16800 “Zorro Dial” circa 1987

In 1979, Rolex introduced the Submariner ref. 16800, which remained in production until 1988. Serving as the successor to the ref. 1680, it became the second iteration of the Submariner to feature a date window. In 1987, Rolex expanded the offering of this reference to include different materials: 316L stainless steel (16800), gold (16808), gold & steel (16803), and the signature steel 904L (168000). Among these variations, there was a limited production of a unique dial referred to as the “Zorro Dial,” characterized by the inverted letter “S” in “Submariner” resembling a letter “Z.” These dials were only produced for a short period, typically within the first two quarters of 1987.
