You might be surprised to discover that the integration of precious stone dials is a relatively recent development in the world of watchmaking. While there were some trials using mother-of-pearl on pocket watches and clock faces, incorporating stone dials posed challenges due to the necessity of thicker cases and the fragile nature of the material. It wasn’t until 1957, with Piaget’s launch of the ultra-thin caliber 9P measuring just 2mm thick, that opportunities for groundbreaking experimentation in watchmaking emerged. Following years of success at their Geneva salon, Piaget introduced their initial collection of watches with stone dials in 1963, showcasing exquisite 1mm cuts of lapis lazuli, opal, malachite, tiger’s eye, and numerous other stones. This intricate process resulted in significant material waste, yet it did not deter the luxury brand from pursuing this venture.

It took no time for the industry to adapt after the success of Piaget’s stone-dialed dress watches. The most noticeable watch brands also introduced their stone-dialed watches in the late 1960s. Vacheron Constantin actively participated in this trend, boasting an extensive array of creatively designed case shapes to match these dressy stone dials. Although manufactured in low quantities, their collection included elliptical, asymmetric, and cushion-shaped cases, featuring a wide range of references.

This reference no. 2169 features a cushion-shaped case in 18k White Gold morphed with an integrated bracelet of the same material. The dial is the star of the show, made from natural Lapis Lazuli cut in a chamfered cushion shape and decorated with diamond indices. This watch is powered by Vacheron’s automatic ultra-thin caliber K1120, based on the JLC calibre 920, which was only ever supplied to Vacheron and Audemars Piguet. It is finished in traditional Genevois style with Côtes de Genève, beveled edges, and perlage. Other intricate features were two razor-sharp, highly finished dauphine hands and an 18k gold Cabochon Crown. Truly a magnificent timepiece!
